3 Reasons Using A Stationary Bike Is Harmful After A Knee Replacement

There are three major reasons why using a stationary bike like this one could be harmful if you’ve had a knee replacement surgery. Reason number one is that it might feed into a muscle imbalance, you probably suffer from really bad osteoarthritis in your knee joint prior to having a knee replacement surgery.

And usually the knee arthritis is caused by an imbalance where the muscles in the thigh are too strong. And they’re compensating because of weak hip muscles, those strong thigh muscles end up adding lots of bad pressure to the joint. And over time as that pressure develops, that’s what sets up the arthritis.

Well having a knee replacement surgery does not fix the imbalance, which means that there’s still lots of pressure going through your knee joint because of those strong thigh muscles. When you ride a bike like this, if you have that imbalance, then the tendency is going to be for you to be using those overly strong muscles, the dominant muscles whenever you’re riding the bike, which means that you’re only going to get them stronger.

Unless you know how to use the weaker muscles and involve them in cycling, you’re going to be injuring yourself in the long run by using the stationary bike. Reason number two is you’re going to wear down the surfaces of the artificial knee. So right here where the knee joint has been replaced.

When you have that imbalance, and you’re using your thigh muscles too much every time you go to cycling, you’re bending your knees back and forth like this, you’re putting that artificial surface through extra forces than what it’s designed to take. So you have, you usually have metal surfaces on the end of the thigh bone on the top of the shin bone right here. And then you have the plastic part that goes between the two.

Usually it’s the plastic that gets worn down. The other part that can get worn down or cracked or it could fail is the cement. If you had a cemented knee replacement, that just means that you had a biomedical cement that was put in between the bone and the metal surfaces that were installed on your knee joint in order to hold the metal surfaces against the bone where it was shaved off. And the cement can be affected by over pressurizing the knee joint from that muscle imbalance.

And reason number three is other side effects as a result of that muscle imbalance if you’re using your thigh muscles too much, and that pressure is building up. Besides the joint surfaces becoming affected, there’s other tissues in your knee joint that were not replaced, that can still become injured.

I’m talking about like bursitis, tendinitis, the nerve that comes across the front of the knee that was severed during the surgery, you can get injuries to the ligaments, which would mean that you’re getting a sprain. And you can get injuries to the tendons, which means that you’re getting a strain.

When you have this imbalance, it causes all kinds of problems. And you really should not be using a stationary bike like this one, if you have not fixed the muscle imbalance.
