I’m going to answer a couple of frequently asked questions our knee pain clients ask us:

Q:”I’m swelling up in my knee, what do I do about it?”

The knee joint, is made up of so many structures.

There are ligaments, the ACL, MCL, PCL, LCL, the meniscus, the cartilage behind the kneecap, and the cartilage between the bones. There are tendons in the area, and muscles that cross the knee joint.

Any one of those things may be causing your knee to hurt and swell.

The amount of swelling is a determining factor on how soon you should seek help from a specialist. If it is painfully swollen, and it hurts to bend your knee and put pressure on it, you definitely want to go get it checked out as soon as possible.

Q:  “When should I see a specialist about this?”

If your knee swells occasionally, like once or twice a year, this is common.

As long as it’s not stopping you from doing what you love, and you’re not out for days and days on end, just ice it, rest it, and stay off your feet.

You may continue with your daily activities, but I wouldn’t recommend running or working out on it.

Now, if your knee(s) are swelling a few times a week or even a few times a month, that is NOT normal. There is an underlining problem and it’s important to figure out what it is.

It can get better, and you can get back to and maintain an active lifestyle.

In fact, the recommendation to help arthritis out is exercise, and there are ways to do it correctly so that it’s not causing more knee swelling.
